In accordance with the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act? (P.L. 104-113), NIST supports the development and use of voluntary consensus standards as the preferred source of standards to be used by the Federal Government. The use of voluntary consensus standards eliminates the cost to the government of developing its own standards, and furthers the policy of reliance upon the private sector to supply goods and services to the government.
To achieve our goals, NIST ITL works with industry and other agencies to develop information technology standards through voluntary consensus standards developing organizations(SDOs). NIST ITL maintains a listing of our present participation at NIST ITL Participation in Voluntary Consensus Standards Developing Organizations.
Since 1984, NIST ITL (and its predecessor organizations) has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a standards developer. ?Information on our ANSI accredited standards development is summarized at ANSI Accreditation of ITL.
